Winning and Becoming a Champion

Winning and becoming a champion....

is something that comes to my mind this time of year. I am a kid from Kentucky, so the number one topic of discussion in this state is always basketball.  Especially in March.

We don’t have professional sports in Kentucky, so the number one sports attraction is college sports. I grew up and was endoctrinated as a Western Kentucky University ”Hilltopper”.  And, while it may not have the name recognition that the universities of Lousiville and Kentucky have, WKU has had a lot of success in its own right. Go to the record books and WKU will come up quite often as one of the top traditions in the country.

In addition, there is always the frenzy of the state tournament in Kentucky. The boys and girls Sweet Sixteen is one of the greatest sporting events in the country. 16 regions in Kentucky, and all high schools are included regardless of size. It is the only state tournament in the country that has this set up. So, Bo Diddly High School in One Street Light Kentucky has an equal chance as the big urban Louisville high school.  Pretty cool.

So in this atmosphere winning and becoming a champion is the major topic of conversation. After all Kentucky won the NCAA Tournament two years ago and Lousiville won it last year. The Tops won the Sun Belt tourneys the past two years and Louisville’s Womens team were runner’s up. So, winning is a big deal here.

So, I have decided to do a series on winning…what does it take to be a winner and be a champion?

I have three nieces, between the three of them, their school cheerleading teams won 8 National Championships. That is incredible, after all they live in Martin, Tennessee, not exactly the crossroads of the universe. So, I’ll start with their motto…

”Winners practice so they can’t get it wrong, Champions practice so they can’t not get it right.”

Isn’t that a great quote?  That applies to everything I think.  In opera you have a lot of music and text to remember, and the only way to approach it is to know it well enough that you can do it without thinking. Folks, you MUST MASTER YOUR ”THING”.

So, in the coming days I am researching the topic of winning and will be adding some of my own insights into it.

But I’ll start here…no one else can win for you.

Thats right, isn’t it? Winners are all people who know that the only way to win at anything is if it is them who did it. Even a person winning the lottery had to actually buy the ticket in order to win. No one else can do that for you.

That is the key to winning. Knowing that no one else can take your trophies.

So that is my number one element to winning. Winning is something that only the person that wins CAN POSSIBLY DO.

If you are ready to take the first step in winning here is a great place to start…winners put their email address here! Why? Because no one else can do that for you!
