Communication Skills 101: Go Fishing

When People Go Fishing They Speak Calmly

What is the best way to learn calm communication skills? Go Fishing!

Whenever I have been fishing, and it has been a long time, the number one thing you know not to do is to talk loudly or make noise. Why? You might scare the fish away! It takes long enough to catch a fish anyway, so you certainly don’t want to be your own worst enemy and cause the fish to leave the area. So, when you speak or move you do it slowly, evenly and peacefully. Fishing is a Zen activity. Go fishing and find peace!

Fishing and hunting, for that matter, are stealth activities. Animals are extremely sensitive to sound, sight and smell. Their senses are highly tuned and always scanning for danger. Fish have the added ability to sense the change in pressure in the water which is a form of sonar. So, the constant monitors in their nature can detect danger at a distance.

Our Plumber Decided To Go Fishing This Weekend

We had some plumbing issues in the house and he came over and fixed it for us. Then, one of the valves he fixed stopped working, so my father called his cell phone. He was on a fishing trip. So, he called us back. It was funny because while he was here his phone “rang” and it was a cricket sound. He said he uses that so he wouldn’t scare off fish while fishing. We listened on speaker phone, and when he called back he spoke very calmly and quietly, and my father asked him why he wasn’t out fishing and he said he was! So, his calm speech, calmed my father down too and it was a good conversation.

People In The South Act Like They Do When They Go Fishing

I got home about 3 weeks ago, and the one thing that strikes me about being here is the time people take and that no one seems to be too much in a hurry. In Germany, every change of the traffic light is like the beginning of a drag race, to the next stop light. Here, it takes everyone a while to notice the light turned, then they advance slowly and to my perception, everything just sort of eases along. In conversations, people talk long and slow as opposed to in Germany where people are very short and get to the point. So, to go fishing would be a good thing for me to do to learn the art of peaceful communication.
